Top climate scientists will meet at Chapman University from December 8-11 to address extreme natural hazards and improve warning systems to reduce fatalities and damage. Organized by the IUGG’s GeoRisk Commission, the conference highlights the growing significance of the intersection between science and societal impacts regarding hazards, particularly in North America, which has faced numerous disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes.

Dr. Ramesh Singh emphasized the critical need to understand local hazards in a global context, as natural disasters can have devastating effects on economies and communities. Notably, the first 11 years of the 21st century saw more lives lost in such events than the entire previous century.

Although the conference is exclusive to participants, a public panel on December 10 will focus on “Disaster Risks: Communication between Science and Society,” featuring experts from various institutions who will discuss predictive modeling, operational forecasting, and strategies for hazard mitigation.

The GeoRisk Commission, formed in 2000, aims to explore the relationship between natural hazards and societal vulnerability. More information on the event can be found at Chapman University’s website.
