The Syilx Okanagan Nation declared a watershed emergency across several regions due to accelerating drought and threats to water security, citing environmental changes like low snowpack and increasing water temperatures. Observations include declining rainbow trout populations and stressed ecosystems. As of May 1, 2026, snowpack levels were alarmingly low, raising concerns about water shortages and wildfire risks. The Nation is urging the provincial government to impose a moratorium on new water licenses, enforce mandatory reductions, and create a co-governance forum to manage water scarcity. Chief Robert Louie emphasized that water health must be prioritized over short-term development. Current management systems are deemed inadequate, with significant knowledge gaps hindering effective decision-making.
