Deadly wildfires are ongoing in the Los Angeles area, with firefighters facing challenging windy conditions. “Containment” of a wildfire means establishing a perimeter around it to prevent further spread, not complete extinguishment. Fire crews create containment lines using natural barriers or by removing vegetation to limit fuel. The extent of containment is reported as a percentage. The Palisades Fire has burned over 23,000 acres and is only 17% contained, while the Eaton Fire has burned more than 14,000 acres and is 35% contained. The Hurst Fire is 97% contained after burning 800 acres. Critical fire conditions are expected due to Santa Ana winds, which may exacerbate existing fires and lead to new ignitions. Even fully contained fires can smolder for a while; the focus is on preventing fires from crossing containment lines.
