Rep. Mike Dobrinski, R-Okeene, advanced House Bill 2162 in committee, which aims to expand a program to eliminate invasive trees in watersheds across Oklahoma. The proposed Terry Peach Watershed Restoration Act builds on a 2023 pilot program focused on the North Canadian Watershed. Dobrinski highlighted that invasive trees like red cedars pose fire dangers and deplete water resources in drought-affected areas. The bill establishes a revolving fund administered by the Oklahoma Conservation Commission, with an estimated $10 million cost pending approval. Success from the pilot program has led to effective eradication efforts, training for fire departments, and a comprehensive three-prong strategy for management. The bill has passed the House Agriculture Committee and is set for further review.
