West Michigan students are collaborating with Ottawa County on a citizen science project to investigate road salt overuse in the Pigeon River watershed. Participants in an environmental studies program at the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District are gathering data on where excess salt, which can harm aquatic life, is being applied. This project aims to improve water quality, especially in the Pigeon River, which flows into Lake Michigan.

Students have been monitoring the river’s ecology, collecting water bugs, and cataloging species, as well as preparing to conduct water quality tests in spring. They also presented their findings to the community and distributed “salt watch” test kits for local water monitoring. The program not only raises awareness about road salt pollution but also equips students with valuable skills in scientific research, preparing them for future environmental science careers. Successful participants can earn college credits from Grand Valley State University.
