Scientists at the Columbia Environmental Research Center are working to reintroduce freshwater mussels into the Clinton River watershed in Michigan, where their populations have significantly declined. Biologist Allison Sieja noted that historically, around 30 mussel species existed in the area, but only 14 remained by 2004. Freshwater mussels are vital for ecosystem health, acting as natural water filters that clean and enrich aquatic environments. Their decline results in the loss of essential ecosystem services. To aid reintroduction, mussel silos were set up at five promising sites in summer 2023 to assess growth potential for the mussels before their release.
