The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is collaborating with the Utah Education Network (UEN) and the University of Utah to enhance wildfire detection through a network of traffic cameras. This initiative, launched in September 2025, aims to improve wildfire response times using AI and live video feeds, particularly in remote areas of the Wasatch Mountain range where reporting delays occur.

UEN plans to install up to 40 cameras in hard-to-reach locations with partners like ALERTWest. When a fire is detected, confirmations trigger notifications to relevant agencies. UDOT is integrating its traffic cameras into this system, increasing coverage despite their fixed position. Future plans may include adding motorized cameras in strategic locations, such as I-15. This project aims to bolster situational awareness and aid first responders in managing wildfires effectively.
